What is This?

“I get asked this a lot. Anytime there’s something  unrecognizable on the floor, for example. And I’ve come to understand that the answer really depends on the definition of ‘What?’ Everyone wants to know what ‘this’ is, but the real question is ‘What is ‘What’?”
